And what a time it is. We both have our Space Wolves Codexes (Codeci?) in hand and I have read through it and want to share my thoughts on it with a break down of all the units compared to the previous codex and the inevitable vanilla comparison. Lets start with the meat and potatoes.

Special Rules:

We still have ATSKNF. Counter attack army wide got a buff with the new USR, allowing you to basically charge when charged, giving you and extra attack. I was hoping we would have kept no matter the odds, giving us stubborn too, but I guess that would have been too much.

The main weakness of this army is that squads do not automatically have a sgt upgrade included. The attaching of a wolf guard covers that and allows for two power weapons in most squads (cheaply too), but due to transport limitations in drop pods, rhinos and land raiders means you have to give up the free special weapon in your squad to add the wolf guard in the squad and be able to move. We lost the Leman Russ, which I just thought looked cool, and no land speeder storm, ironclad dread, or thunderfire cannons (all of which I had already).

But I am not complaining one bit, everything that has been added more than makes up for it.

TROOPS:

Gray Hunters: These guys are the backbone of this army and its true strength in my opinion. They went down in points and added Uber Grit and free grenades!!! They get one special weapon at 5 men, and get a free one at 10. Only one power weapon, down from two, at a higher price too. You may buy one mark of the wolven, and one wolf standard per squad and one plasma pistol (down from two). MoW gives you base 1d6 + 1 Rending attack. Standard lets you re-roll ALL ones in one assault phase per game. If you roll like I do, then it is priceless. Due to all the options you do have a little more play with wound allocations, a running theme throughout the army.

Definitely, a big improvement over 3rd ed. Cheaper, more attacks on charge and receiving charges (3 each), shootier, and some new goodies in assault. Big win over last codex. Only loss was extra power weapon and plasma pistol, which I don’t trust due to getting hot.

Compared to Vanilla, I prefer these guys. The only advantages smurfs have are the heavy weapon and combat squads. GH are cheaper, can have more special weapons, MoW, plasma pistols, and standard. Adding a WG can get you an extra fist, or other goodies, and you could even add a Termie if you want to

Blood Claws:

These are your assault specialist troops. They get two extra attacks on the charge. They have space marine scout stats, but space marine armor. You can run up to 15 in one squad. Same upgrade options as GH except for standard. They cannot shoot at targets inside of charge range due to getting so excited about the charge unless a WG or IC is attached. The lower weapon skill doesn’t affect them much too hit, but they will be hit more often.

These guys lost a lot compared to previous edition. I don’t see myself using these guys as troops. More expensive points wise, lose two power weapons, pay more for the one they have, the only upside is the free special weapon but you have to have 15!

The only real comparison is the nilla scout, but the roles are completely different.

DEDICATED Transports:

Rhino: Got much cheaper, identical to vanilla Marines. Great for dual melta squad drive-by shootings. I will run at least one of these.

Razorback: Ditto on points, I love these but will keep them to my long fangs, since I can’t combat squaud now. Great for a cheap mobile H Bolter.

Drop Pod: Ditto, can also drop terminators.

I will add more during the next week and break down the other wolves.

Hell Yeah!

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 230px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_ufvTUYUtLKM/Sokz9G2T1iI/AAAAAAAAGa4/gFS7HFwIyOM/s320/m410443a_60010699001_ENSHBoxFront_873x627.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5370881155519469090" />
Space Hulk!

Hell yeah I pre-ordered it!

I am a Child of the Omnissiah, cultist of the Machine God. I played at a 1500pt tournament at my FLGS. Sunshine Gaming is the only place in Dade County that I know of, and they have a huge selection of GW stuff, as well as Flames of War and more board games than I ever thought existed, and its also the only place I know of that gives a discount!!! Now that the plug for Sunshine is done, lets get on to the important stuff.

I brought a vanilla space marine army that breaks down this way:

HQ:
Pedro Kantor

Elite:
6 Sternguard, one PF, two Combi-melta, Razorback with HB
1 Dreadnaught Assault Cannon, Heavy Flamer
5 Allied Grey Knight Terminators Psychic hood, and auspex on brother captain

Troops:
10 man Tac Squad split into combat squads Multi-melta / Melta gun, PF sgt
5 Scouts sniper rifles, HB

Heavy:
LR Redeemer with extra armor, Multi-melta
Vindicator

My first battle was against a Tyranid list with three carnifex nidzilla style, a Hive Tyrand, bunch of warriors, two gaunt troops without end, and a ripper swarm. We played a 5 objective game with spearhead deployment. I was seriously outnumbered, and those nidzillas sucked!!!!!!! I could not kill that carnifex, and it kept regenerating wounds!! I was able to wipe out the Hive Tyrant with my Termies with Pedro, after the LR softened it up. I had the Sternguard sacrifice themselves to the nidzilla Carni in order to keep him away from my objective. At the end of the fifth turn, I held one objective, two were clear and the third contensted. Unfortunately it went to an extra round. I forgot about my orbital bombardment (which wouldn't be the only time I did). That would have cleared out an objective and given me the win. I also forgot to run up my Razorbacks to contest his lone objective. Somehow a single gaunt stood up to a landraider full of termies and pedro to give him a minor victory.

MVP: LR, this thing is Sick!!! Took hit after hit and kept on going!!! I want a second one

My second battle was gainst IG, too many to count guardsmen (at least fifty) Straken with a priest and medic, a squad of two russes, a single russ, and a bassilisk (ouch!!!). This was a the mission where you hold oto your base and try to take his. His army was very immobile (good for me). I was able to steal the initiative and rushed in as fast as I could. My scouts were set up across from his base and soaked up all kinds of fire, it turned out he forgot where my objective was, and when I realized it I did the non-sneaky thing and told him he was going after the wrong thing. He thanked me by dropping a pie plate from his basilisk on my objective!!! But the emporer was on my side, and my troops held. I dropped his two russ squad, and my Temies and Pedro tore up every troop and his HQ with a smile, lsoing one GK, which made him happy. I cleared his objective and my sternguard rode up to take it. My opponent had to leave after turn four, but the writing was on the wall and I got the points for a massacre. My LR showed its resilliance by taken at least one pen hit a round and never stopped fighting.

MVP: Pedro with the GK termies, don't leave home without them!!!

My third battle was really just a training exercise between two marine chapters (That's my story and I'm sticking to it). He had three tac squads with lascannons, assault squad led by a chaplain, three dreads, three rhinos, cant remember what else. It was a four objective game with dawn of war deployment. I shot up his chappy (Chaplain Bill) and assault squad by my LR, then charged in with my Termie/Pedro squad. I also spent the rest of the game shooting the squads in the terrain to clear the objectives, and realized what a pain shooting at 3+ saves really is. I was able to whittle down both squads to just one LC marine each. One of which (after 5 pen hits on my LR blew it up) held an objective at the very end. He deep striked a squad of termies with an asault cannon behind my troops at an objective, so I tied them up with my dread for the rest of the game. He was able to charge one of my objectives with a dread, but was just outside the 3" range to contest it. My other objective was held by my scouts without a unit in sight. My GK and Pedro squad cleared one of his objectives, and the sternguard were running in after their Razorback was blown up to shoot up his lone objective when turn 5 ended. This timeI needed turn 6 for the win, and of course the game ended a draw. My opponent had a question about the placement of his dread due to the terrain, saying it should have been closer but because of placing it on it would have toppled it. I told him he was right, and he went ant told the tourney coordinator and told him, so he got a minor victory instead.

MVP: GK Termies with Pedro.

Lessons Learned, don't forget your orbital Bombardment, it can clear an objective!!! GK Termies ae rock solid, and Pedro makes the tougher, with more points, I'd add Cassius. The power of the machine spirit and extra armor make the LR a true beast, and the redeemer cannons just kill anything and everything short of 2+ saves. I wish my sternguard would have gotten off a few more shots to earn some points, but keeping them rolling in a razor makes the opponentforget that they can score, and the GKs keep them distracted.

In the future I'd like to add some more speed maybe bikes, ass marines, or even a LS Storm to steal an objective in the end. It was a long and fun afternoon. But to start the new year, I’ll start posting more often. Now onto the good stuff!!!

My lovely, beautiful, incredible, smart, sensitive, loving, and did I mention LOVELY wife actually talked Santa into getting me some reinforcements for my forces!!!

A box of Space Marine Terminators
Terminator Chaplain
Venerable Dreadnaught
Scout Sgt Telion
Scout Biker
A set of citadel washes
Forgeworld space wolf terminator upgrades
Forgeworld pre-Heresy landreaider upgrade kit with the space wolf doors!!!

Oh my God I love this woman, If I could I’d marry her again!!!

I am really looking forward to putting these together and painting them, but the forgeworld stuff is really intimidating, I’m not sure if my eyes or hands are steady enough so I have to practice a little more before I try. The pre-heresy kit is amazing, someone needs to investigate forgeworld for importing addictive substances. As soon as I figure out how to I’ll post pictures of the kit and in progress pics too. This will be the centerpiece to my new force. I also wanna pick their grey knight land raider redeemer kit, luckily my birthday is coming soon (She reads this blog!).

I’m actually on vacation now, but have had no 40k luck, been to busy in New Orleans. Guys, if you have the chance you cannot miss this town. I was there with Espi before Katrina, and it was great seeing the quarters back to normal. The outskirts of town are still rebuilding, and we took a tour to take it all in, it was a very humbling experience. The people there are thrilled to see tourists and I had the most amazing Fried Chicken there at Coop’s Place on Decatur. And Beignets are the perfect 40k food to keep you going through that 7th turn. Found a place near Metaire called Galactic Comics, nice selection, a couple of tables, and open gaming night on Saturday, the owner was really cool and has good deals on shipping, just ask him.

Burning the late night oil

Since HyenaDave has yet to post anything on this blog since creating it and my constant badgering via text messages of “POST SOMETHING!” has yet to work, I’ll post on what I’ve been working on since I couldn’t sleep last night.

Seeing that my Exorcists Army list is lead by a Vulkan He’stan clone (I have to come up with a name for him) I’m going to have to make a mini to represent him in the game.

I first started looking at Space Marine Captain and Commander minis. I wasn’t too happy with what I found in my bit boxes. I found a Captain Stern Grey Knight and it looked promising. I took it out of the blister and started looking around for a suitable “Spear of Vulkan.” I found that the Grey Knight nemesis force weapon looks just like the picture of Vulkan He’stan in the 5th edition Space Marine Codex. I took one form one of my many un-built Grey Knight Terminators. Next was “The Gauntlet of the Forge.” This took me a while to come up with a solution. I think I’m going to use a lighting claw arm. I’m going to cut off the claws and somehow make it look like it will spit out a wall of flaming death. I say going because I don’t have any lighting claws in my bit box. I made a mental note to call Neal at The WarStore and place an order lighting claws from his BattleWagon Bits service along with everything else I need for my Exorcists Army List. It’s Christmas time and I deserve a present to myself. I’m either going to make “Kerare’s Mantle” out of Green Stuff and/or a combination of Green Stuff and Malus Darkblade cloak. It’s from the fantasy Warhammer Dark Elves. Sometimes it’s good to have the Games Workshop catalog when looking for bits.

I started to look closer at the picture in the codex and at the Captain Stern mini. I wasn’t too happy. I needed something that looked a bit beefier and less ornate. I would also have to do a lot of converting and modeling. More than I wanted to do. I started again looking though my minis. I found one of the new Techmarines. I was going to use it as a Iron Father for my Iron Hands Army but the Emperor has a higher calling for him of serve in the Exorcists Space Marine Chapter. He looks beefy and sturdy and matches well what’s in the codex. I started to line things up and it looked very promising.

At this point I think I was a little delirious from the lack of sleep because I decided to magnetize the mini’s arms. I pulled out my dremel and started to carve into the mini. I really didn’t have to right size magnets but I made it work. In the pictures below you will see what I’ve started. It’s really early work.

I like some of the new Sternguard Veteran Squad. It’s a must take for any army list. The ability to choose what rounds to fire suiting your target is awesome. It’s more true to life.

The Thunderfire Cannon, you can really reach out and touch someone with its 60” range. Again, being able to choose your ammo is always a plus.

The new Land Raider Redeemer, look out hoard armies! This one is just for you!

Master of the Forge, Conversion Beamer, for those with Iron Hands army like myself, it’s a great addition. I believe that Matthew Ward was watching an episode of Star Trek with the Borg when he came up it.

Special Characters. Pedro Kantor is just bad ass!

Now for some of my not so likes;

The general breaking of non-codex armies. As far as I’m concerned all of the non-codex armies are broken. I know some of you are going to disagree but I stand firm on this.

Where on the map is Medusa?!?!? It’s a slap in the face to all faithful Iron Hands players!

A Storm Shield is a Storm Shield! Being a Dark Angels player this makes it really silly that a Storm Shield is something completely different in a different chapter. The posted errata by Games Workshop are just worthless. It makes me mad as hell!

Vanguard Veteran Squad seem worthless to me. I will just take regular Assault Marines.

Matthew Ward must be an Ultramarine player. All the loving went to the smurfs.

Well, I won’t be playing my Dark Angels anytime soon. Like I said in a previous post, I’m making a Exorcists Army. It’s a Codex army featured in the Space Marine Codex. I actually liked the fluff behind them. I have been following them since The Badab War. I can up with a preliminary army list for them, lots of melts and flamers. I just with I could take a Baal Predator.

I call it my Hellfire List.

HQ: Forgefather Vulkan He'stan (190 Pts)
It's been a while since we last posted. It's been a crazy few days and I just haven't had the time to post. Over the weekend or so I'll be posting a few thoughts that have been rolling and jumping around in my head.

I recently got the new space marine codex. I know that I'm probably the last guy on earth to get it but hey I have other vices too. I'll be posting my mostly positive thoughts on the new codex along with a few rants that I have.

I'll be throwing up a new army list idea that I've been contemplating. I am thinking of making a Exorcists Space Marine army based on the Salamanders. I just like the idea of rolling flaming death. Lots of flamers and multi-meltas. Burn baby burn!

I'll be posting pictures of my army new army as I build and paint them. HyenaDave had a great idea of magnetizing the arms of the terminators and dreadnoughts. I can't wait to try that.

Over the next few weeks HyenaDave and I will be posting about a new War40k gaming place. It's called Tate's Gaming Satellite. For those that are familiar with the comic book scene in Ft. Lauderdale, it's run by the same Tate from Tate's Comics.

Well that's it for now. I too will be chronicling my re-entry into the gaming world of Warhammer 40K. It's going to be an uphill battle. Gaming in South Florida is lacking as of late but I think that HyenaDave and myself can take it back in the name of the Immortal Emperor.

I was introduced into tabletop 40k gaming by HyenaDave. I spent many hours painting minis. It's been a while since I painted but I recently set up my painting table up again. Its all about the details when it comes to painting minis.

My first army were the Dark Angels. A whole chapter of antisocial, broody, ill-tempered Space Marines! What's not to love! They have some of the best fluff as well. I could never buy enough of those robed Space Marines.

My second army were the Necrons. I bought a huge army of from Neil and his Warstore back when he had this famous army deals. Soulless metallic horror from an ancient past. I just loved the "We'll Be Back" rule. They just swept the battlefield in a mindless murderous rampage. This army actually lead me back to the Space Marines.

Third Army, Iron Hands! Space Marines that frenetical following of the Machine Cult and hatred of the flesh is only shadowed my their extreme loyalty to the God Emperor.

Forth Army, the Tau. This army in mainly unassembled and unpainted. I do have a small force put together. I actually never fielded them. That's when HyenaDave and I took our break form gaming. I blame women and EVE Online. The Tau do remind me of the Sleestak from the Land of the Lost.

Fifth Army. Vanilla Space Marines. This is around the time that the Witch Hunters and Daemonhunters Codex came out. I made a force of Vanilla Space Marines lead by an Inquisitor Lord. Depending on my mood It would be a radical inquisitor with a force of Relictors Space Marines or a puritan inquisitor with my beloved Grey Knights.

I plan to retool and rebuild my Dark Angels along with my Vanilla Marines. I tend to use a combined arms tactics that I learned from my military days. It's worked for me so far but I need more armor. I'm going add it to my wish list that my girlfriend is asking for. I plan on posting pictures soon. I'm building a picture light box so I can post them.

I am a Zombie Hunter. I carry a battle axe in my car and I have built up an arsenal over the years. The Zombie Survival Guide is my holy bible. I have a plan and I'm ready for when they rise! I tend to go on rants somestimes. Just bare with me folks. I do have big plans for this blog. As soon as I have some free time I'll get rid of this default layout. I hate it! Maybe this will lead to to the podcast HyenaDave and I have always talked about doing.

Tabletop gaming in Miami, Florida! You gotta love it!

I'm off. The IT Crowd reruns is on TV. UK television is so much better than US. The American version of "Life on Mars" is terrible!

It's a start!

Slowly but surely it's all coming together. He's a close friend, almost like family. The only issue is that his first army was the Dork Angels, and my pups aren't too keen on that. I guess we'll just have to give him a chance anyway, he does deserve it. Espi is a whiz on this whole blogging thing, a pretty good painter, and not too shabby with tactics. I look forward to reading his tips and tactics in future blogs. He is also an avid Zombie Hunter and will be adding some much appreciated help in that arena.

My previous armies

Since I have a little downtime, and my wife is sound asleep, let me take a minute to detail my previous armies and what I am about to build.

The army that caught my attention and drew me into 40K are the space wolves! What is there not to like about space vikings that like dogs!!!!!!!! So I started in 3rd by buying up all the wolves’ stuff I could find. (Which except for the scouts and a new wolf priest is all there is now) I never actually fielded my army in a tournament, but I did rule my kitchen table with them.

I then started an Eldar army for my local 1750 tourneys. The Craftworld Codex came out and I started an Iyanden Army. This army was led by a farseer, and the core was two units of wraithguards with spiritseers in wave serpents and two wraithlords. My trump card unit was based off of firedragons in a VDR creation inspired by the citadel journal's transport for the harlequins. This was basically an extended vyper without a cannon, used as an open topped (so my dragons can shoot from it) vehicle, and a fusion pike for a little extra oomph! This was a great army against mechanized armies, and marines. Horde armies just sucked!!! I hated them. Tactically I did very well, but since my army still needed some paint I would always place, but never win.

I experimented with Chaos, which gave me some nice bits to convert. But, I have always been a good guy at heart and can't bare to be evil. Bought some (and by that I mean ALOT) Tyranids since I was tired of getting wiped out by hordes. Then I figured out that painting them would be more than I could handle. Same experiment with orks.

Then my second true love army came out, Grey Knights!!! I know the army is daemon hunters, but the knights are what I always wanted, Super marines!! Just sooooooo expensive pointwise. On the other hand I only need to paint a couple of figures for an army! And they are really easy to paint too. Unfortunately, by the time I collected enough all the stores in my area went out of business.

I now plan on building and painting my wolves up. I might use the new marines’ rules until they give us a new codex, and just have the coolest looking marines ever. I will also post my version of what the new codex should be in the near future. I also want to build up and play my grey knights. I know they are a tough army to play, but they are just too cool.

A new beginning

I am not new to 40k, but I have been away since 3rd Edition. It's not that I had any issues with 4th, but ever since my favorite tourney spot shut down (Alternate Dimensions next to the Sports Grill) I have not been able to find a good game within an hour of my house anymore. Now with 5th, Apocalypse, and new Marines I had to bite. This blog will chronicle my re-entry into gaming, the rebuilding and retooling of my armies, new tactica, and most importantly maybe help me find a game or two or three. Be patient with me, I am new to blogging, and might ramble on about some of my other favorite topics ... Zombies ... Travel … Food ... and anything else that may pop up!
